The device was developed in conjunction with a deepwater drilling contractor. It allows for proof testing of offshore handrails utilizing an adjustable hydraulic arm driven by rig air.

• 87 psi produces a horizontal force of 200 lbs.

OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.23(e)(5)(iv) states the following:
 Handrails shall be capable of withstanding a load of at least 200 lbs. applied in any direction at any point on the rail.

 There is no present OSHA, DNV, API, or ABS standard concerning the testing distance interval for handrails on offshore platforms.  HADCO Services has tested at intervals of 20, 25, 50, and 70 feet.
